WHAT IS SOUL WRITING?

Soul Writing is a method of writing from intuition, developed by Dr Sarah Walton when she was recovering from a brain injury in 2004. She now teaches it internationally to unblock her clients’ creativity and unlock their lives. Soul Writing has also helped those clients live soulfully in isolation during the COVID lockdown.

DISCOVER YOUR SOUL VOICE

Your soul voice is the voice of creative intuition. Our soul voice is often quiet or silenced by self-judgment. You can learn to trust that voice to guide your writing and life decisions. When you connect to your authentic voice and write down your feelings and imaginative visions, something magical happens. Everyone has an inner voice wanting to be heard. By expressing your soul voice, you move into alignment with your self. When we write from our soul it can be a liberating and healing experience. The key is to trust without judgement what shows up on the page. I encourage you to read the words you write out loud – to hear your soul’s voice.

CREATIVE MEDITATION

A neuropsychologist informed me that I may never write fiction again – devastating news for a novelist! I knew that doctor was wrong. I’d been a meditator since a child and used meditation to take me into a state of stillness. From the stillness, I found I could write. I did not write what I intended or wanted to write. Instead I slowly wrote what wanted to be written. The book that fell out of me was Sophia’s Tale - A Fairytale for Adults. Some clients have written poems, some what appear to be random words, others whole books they didn't realise they carried inside them. The key is to trust without judgement what shows up on the page. I encourage you to read the words you write out loud – to hear your soul’s voice.

6 Easy Soul Writing Steps:

1. Creative Meditation Space

Create a calm space in your home where you can write. In this place create a small altar dedicated to your creative journey. Treat it with reverence. Add a crystal, a plant or candle to make it sacred. Writing used to be a sacred art. Writing from our deepest self is always a sacred act. Put a notebook and pen in this space.

2. Be the Breath
Sit or lay down. Bring your whole awareness to your breath. Let go of to-do lists. Let them drift away. Focus all your attention on your breath moving in and out of your body. Relax.

3. A Safe Sanctuary

The biggest block to writing is fear. To write from your soul you need to feel safe. One way to bypass fear is to imagine a safe place in your imagination. Close your eyes and imagine a place where you feel very, very safe. Maybe it’s a real place you have been to on holiday, a place you went to as a child, or conjure from your imagination a place of infinite safety. Breathe in this imaginary space and relax. Connect to this place with your five senses. What can you see, hear, smell, taste, touch? Now pick up your pen and describe the environment.

4. Divine Dialogue

The key to Soul Writing is to not think. Just write down your feelings if that is all that comes. In times of crisis, that is a powerful tool to stay present. Below are some writing prompts to get you started. Connect to the breath; let go of thoughts. Then write these sentence openings and carry on writing – don’t worry about punctuation.

·       My happy place is …

·       My soul voice says …

·       The last time I felt joyful was …

·       My soul purpose is …

5. Make friends with your Inner Wisdom

Routine is grounding in a time of crisis and uncertainty. Breathe yourself into your safe sanctuary and listen to what your soul wants to say.

6. Expert Tip
Creativity is about experimenting and playing. Children don’t care about the outcome of their play. Step into play and discover parts of yourself that surprise and delight you!
